Description

The apollo ( Parnassius apollo ) is a species of Lepidoptera ditrisio of the family Papilionidae own mountain ranges in temperate and cold regions of Eurasia,including the Iberian Peninsula.It is a relatively large butterfly,which can reach a wingspan of about 8 cm.It is immediately recognizable by the predominantly white color of its wings,of parchment-like texture and translucent (hyaline) in its marginal parts,where they lack scales.The front wing has a series of large black spots and the rear wing has two large red ocelli with white nucleus and surrounded by a black ring.The shape and color of these ocelli vary enormously from one population to another.The caterpillar is entirely black,with rows of yellow or orange spots on each side and with black hairs that are born of small warts.It can reach about 5 cm.
