Grey teal

(Anas gracilis)

galery

Description

The gray teal ( Anas gracilis,Buller 1869) is a bird of the family of the Anatidae. The plumage has a variegated gray-brown coloring throughout the body except the dull brown back, the chin and the throat are white, the dark green beak and the eyes are dark red.The secondary remiges of the wing have the characteristic glossy blue-black mirror edged with white.Males are larger than females but both sexes are similar. The gray teal can be confused with the female of the brown teal ( Anas castanea ) which, however, has a pale brown, rather than white, throat and chin coloration. The male of the brown teal is instead quite distinguishable, being mainly brown-reddish in the chest and hips, dark brown color above and with a head and a shiny green neck. The two species coincide for habitats, habits and verse;they often mix together by living in contact.
