Yellow-backed duiker

(Cephalophus silvicultor)

Description

The yellow- backed cephalopop (Cephalophus silvicultor Afzelius,1815) is a cephalophous originating in central and western Africa. The name Afrikaans duiker, attributed to all the cephalopters, means "diver",and refers to the habit of these animals,to dive into the dense vegetation to find shelter. With 125-190 cm of length and 45-80 kg of weight, the one with the yellow back is the largest cephalopop. In addition to the size,it is distinguished from its similar by the spot of yellow hair on the back, which contrasts sharply with the brownish-black color of the rest of the body. The posterior region is higher than the anterior one,and the head is elongated and wedge-shaped.Both sexes have short cylindrical horns, more grooved at the base, and a crest of long solid brown hair placed between them.Unlike almost all the other cephalopods, the yellow-backed one does not constantly wiggle or "flag" the tail, which measures 11-20 cm.
