Description

Anaxyrus quercicus is a species of anuran amphibian in the Bufonidae family of toads.Formerly included in the genus Bufo.It is an endemism of the coastal regions of the southeastern United States in the states Virginia,Mississippi,Louisiana.1 It is considered the smallest toad species in North America with a length of 33 mm.It can be identified by the clear band in the middle of the back,variable brown and black spots and proportionally large parotoid glands.They are mainly diurnal and can be found in pine forests hidden in plant remains.It is a carnivorous species that feeds mainly on insects.The reproduction takes place in shallow ponds caused by the rains.The males have an elongated mouth sac that extends to produce its characteristic call.Its natural habitat is temperate forests,scrub,lakes and temporary marshes,farmland,pastures,irrigation,canals and dikes.It is threatened by loss of its habitat.
