Description

Gnathanodon speciosus (Forsskal,1775),commonly known as trevally murmurs is a bony fish marine belonging to the family Carangidae.It is the only species belonging to the genus Gnathanodon.The main distinctive character of this species compared to all other trevally is the absence of teeth on the jaws.The body is oval,quite tapered,similar in proportions to that of Mediterranean amberjack.Another distinctive feature of the species is the livery that,in adults,is golden on the back and slopes on the silver on the sides and belly,always with golden reflections.Five or six narrow black vertical bands are present on the sides,in many specimens some less visible and marked dark bands are interspersed with the black bands.The juveniles have a chromium-yellow background color with five or six showy dark vertical bands,one of which crosses the eye.The maximum known size is 120 cm,the average of 75cm.The known maximum weight is 15 kg.
