Rabbitfish

(Chimaera monstrosa)

galery

Description

The Chimera looks so strange that it is unmistakable. It has a characteristic rounded snout, similar to that of a rabbit, with a very large dark-colored eye and a fairly small mouth. The first dorsal fin is high and is armed with a very evident rigid spine connected to a poisonous gland. The second dorsal is very low and long;the anal fin is small;the caudal fin is small and ends with a long filament. The pectoral fins are very large and are pointed. There is sexual dimorphism : the males have a curved appendage on the forehead, called clasper, which is believed to restrain the female during the copula.
