Description

The camao,pigeon-partridge camao 1 or azulona ( Geotrygon caniceps ) is a species of columbiform bird of the family Columbidae endemic to Cuba.In Hispaniola there is a similar species ( Geotrygon leucometopia ) previously considered a subspecies.Geotrygon canicepsIt measures about 28 cm long.In the male the forehead is very light gray,which is darkening towards the apex of the head.Iridescent colorations begin on the back and sides from the back of the neck.In the neck above it is dark gray and back turns metallic green.On the shoulders and above the back the color is bright violet blue.In the rump and the coverts on the tail the color is blue.The tail is blackish.The wings have iridescent coverts that go from the violaceous one near the back to the green one when moving away,the primary feathers are of chestnut color.The throat is very light gray.On the neck in front and the chest is light brown and the belly backwards becomes paler.The iris of the eye is coral red.The peak at the base is coral red and at the tip it is dark beige.The tarsi are long compared with other species.The legs are pink.In the female the coloration is less showy,less intense in the tone and brightness of the iridescences,which is even less in the immature,more brownish.He walks on the floor,his body wobbling.The voice is a rapid repetition in prolonged series of a low "hup" or another one less repeated,higher and in the end more intense "hu-up".It feeds on fruits and seeds.He likes güira seeds very much.
