(Dasycercus cristicauda)
The crested-tailed mulgara has a head-body length of 12.5-22 cm and a tail of 7.5-12.5 cm and weighs 60-170 g.It has a squat constitution, with short limbs, small ears and a little pronounced muzzle. It is not equipped with a genuine baby carrier, and the babies are protected only by skin folds and remain hanging on their nipples. The fur,in the upper regions,is of a variable color from brownish to reddish-brown,while on the belly it is white or cream. It owes the common name to the fact that the terminal half of the tail is covered,on the upper area,by a series of long black hairs. It is distinguished from the other species of Dasycercus,D.blythi,to have three premolars and eight nipples, instead of two and six respectively.
