Hourglass dolphin

(Lagenorhynchus cruciger)

galery

Description

The lagenorinco from the cross ( Lagenorynchus cruciger ) is a small dolphin that lives in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters. The dolphin has been rarely seen for a long time.It was first identified as a new species by Quoy and Galmard in 1824 from a design made in the South Pacific in 1820.It is the only cetacean to have been widely accepted as a species solely on the basis of a sighting.Until 1960,despite decades of whaling in the Southern Ocean, only three specimens had been brought to the attention of the scientists.Up to now only six complete specimens and 14 fragmentary specimens have been examined.More information has been obtained from 4 strandings and some boats that deliberately pushed to observe dolphins in areas rarely visited by ships. Although it is traditionally classified in the genus Lagenorhynchus, recent molecular analyzes indicate that the dolphin hourglass is currently more closely related to the dolphins of the genus Cephalorhynchus and should be classified in that genus.
