(Phoebastria albatrus)

Description

The ' Albatross Short-tailed or Steller ( Phoebastria albatrus Pallas,1769 ) is a rare seabird of the North Pacific.Although related to the other albatrosses of the northern Pacific,it also shows behavioral and morphological characteristics typical of the albatrosses of the Southern Ocean. It was described for the first time by the German naturalist Peter Simon Pallas on the basis of spoils collected by the intrepid Georg Wilhelm Steller (from which one of the common names of this species derives).A common time,it has been brought on the threshold of the extinction from the feathers trade, but thanks to a careful protection its number has recently increased.
