Description

The yellow cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata) is a species of passerine bird belonging to the family Thraupidae;some consider it in Emberizidae.It is the only species of the monotypic genus Gubernatrix.It inhabits the entire Pampean area of ​​central Argentina,and in Brazil,Paraguay,Uruguay.It is protected due to its hunting and destruction of its natural habitat where the use of plains for planting and the use of pesticides put it at risk.Its body consists of a crest and a black throat.Yellow eyebrow and malar.Striated back of olive and black.Ventral yellow greenish.Yellow tail with black central wheelhouses.When reaching adulthood the male and female differ only in the tone and intensity of the color of their feathers.The male has a melodious song.The yellow cardinal was declared a provincial natural monument in the Province of Entre Ríos,Argentina,by decree 4933/02 of 2002.It measures 20 cm in length.It has a large finch and a striking pattern.The male has olive-yellow upperparts with streaks on the blackish back.Black crest,thick and bib,both broadly yellow rimmed.Yellow-olive chest and flanks with yellow center to the belly.Yellow tail with black central rectrices.The female,more subdued previously.Gray cheeks,chest and sides of belly,with pale center.Some yellow on the back crown,but otherwise,the ridge and the black bib lined white.Voice in musical series of 4 or 5 whistles.
