Description

The green Bengali ( Amandava formosa ) is a species of bird passerine of the family Estrildidae endemic to the Indian subcontinent.It is characterized by its greenish and yellowish body,bright red beak and " zebra stripes " on the flanks.Previously they were very common cage birds.The denomination of the sort is a corruption of the name of the city of Ahmedabad,which was the center of the commerce of birds in India.They have a restricted distribution and populations are threatened by the bird trade.The bird measures approximately 10 cm in length.The body is green above,yellow below,the beak is reddish,and has black and white stripes on the flanks.Both sexes have clear tips in the wing and tertiary coverts.The upper plumage is olive green.The upper tail feathers are yellow;the tail is black and bordered with wide feathers.The chin is pale yellow and the lower part of the chest,belly and cloaca are a brighter yellow color.The flanks have shades of suedewith brown and white.The bill is a waxy reddish color and the legs are a fleshy or brown tone.The female is slightly paler than the male.The young birds are paler,with a black bill and lack the coloring on the flanks.
