Description

It is a fairly small and squat kestrel with a large squared head.It is 27-30 cm long,has a wingspan of 61-68 cm and weighs 167-246 g.The female is larger than the 4% male and heavier than 10-20%.The plumage is predominantly dark gray,with a light head and rump.The tail is gray,with thin black bands and a wider subterminal band.The lower face of the remiges is also barred.The wax and legs are yellow and around the eye there is a bare skin area of ​​the same color.The beak is dark gray and the eyes are brown.The young specimens are gray-brown,with the sides striped and without the head and the rump of lighter color.The wax and the periocular ring are greenish.Generally the Dickson kestrel is silent,but sometimes it emits a loud cry of alarm.In the nest,the parents invite the little ones to eat with a faint call similar to a meow.
