Description

The Asian giant pond turtle (Heosemys grandis Gray,1860) is a species of turtle from the family of Geoemididae.It is one of the largest aquatic turtles in Asia and can reach 450 mm in length.The carapace varies in color from brown to gray-brown to black,with a lighter central streak.The plastron is yellow,and in the juveniles on each scale there are black spots from which blackish striations radiate.The head is gray-green or brown and is mottled with numerous yellow,orange or pink spots,which disappear with age.It is a herbivorous species that feeds mainly on aquatic plants and algae.4-6 eggs are laid and hatch after about 100 days.
