Description

Aran Rock Lizard,the Pyrenean Lizard of Aran or Lizard of Aran,is a species of lizard of the family of Lacertidae endemic of the Val d'Aran in the Pyrenees.This small lizard about 6 cm has brown-gray to grayish back with dark sides.It lives in rock formations and scree,and is active only during 4 months of the year,from snowmelt (in May) to September.This lizard mates at the end of the hibernation period,to give a laying of 3 to 4 eggs.The population of this lizard is declining because of overgrazing and the disappearance of its habitat related to the development of human infrastructure.That's why this lizard is classified as "Endangered" ( EN ) on the red list of the IUCN.This lizard is terrestrial and diurnal,and has a size of about 6 cm.It is gray-gray to greyish on the back with usually two rows of dark spots on the front of the body on either side of the spine,these rows are bordered on the flanks of a lighter line before flanks dark.It often has blue spots at the junction between the belly and the flanks.The belly is white.There is also a large scale on the cheek.
