Description

The Swinhoe pheasant ( Lophura swinhoii ) is a bird of the genus Lophura.This species is endemic to Taiwan,where the original and secondary mature forests live between 200 and 2.300 meters of altitude.The male specimens have a dark blue plumage,while the tuft,the upper part of the back and the tail are white.The face has a red area around the eyes.The female is a dark brownish color.The bird owes its name to the English ornithologist Robert Swinhoe,who first described it in 1862.It feeds mainly on seeds and fruit,but does not disdain insects.The females lay 2-6 eggs,which hatch for 25-28 days.The babies leave the nest after 3 days.The species is considered vulnerable due to the reduction of the habitat.
