Description

Sturnira lilium ( E.Geoffroy,1810 ) is a bat of the family of the Fillostomids widespread in Central and South America and the Caribbean.Small bat,with head and body length between 54 and 65 mm,the length of the forearm between 37 and 42 mm,the length of the foot between 12 and 15 mm,the length of the ears between 15 and 18 mm and a weight of up to 18 g.The fur is short,soft,dense and velvety.The dorsal parts are brown-orange,sometimes greyish or bright orange,while the ventral parts are lighter.There are tufts of long yellow,orange or dark red hairs around glands located on each shoulder.The snout is short and wide.The nasal leaf is well developed and lanceolate,with the front portion welded to the upper lip.The ears are short,triangular,with rounded ends and widely separated.The tragus is short and tapered.The wing membranes are brown and attached at the back on the ankles.It has no tail,while the uropatage is reduced to a fringe of hair along the inside of the lower limbs.The tread is rudimentary.
