Golden-backed black uakari

(Cacajao melanocephalus)

Description

The black uacari (Cacajao melanocephalus Humboldt,1812) is a platy-like primate of the Pitheciidae family.Dimensions: Measure between 35 and 50 cm in length,to which are added twenty cm of tail, for a weight between 2.5 and 4 kg.These dimensions make it the largest among the Pitecids.Appearance: The hair is long and silky, dark brown on most of the body, with black sides. The two subspecies are distinguishable for the colors: the nominal subspecies has black or reddish areas on the back, which in the subspecies ouakary are instead yellow or golden.A third variety, still to be described scientifically, could even turn out to be a species in its own right (Cacajao hosomi according to the scholar Jean-Philippe Boubli). The bare parts of the body (face and hands) are black: the face is bony and with a particularly strong jaw, embedded in large molars and canines long as the incisors (one and a half centimeter).
