galery

Description

The parakeet Malherbe ( Malherbe's Parakeet Souancé,1857 ) is a small bird of the family of Psittaculidi endemic of New Zealand. In New Zealand it is commonly called a front-to-front parakeet,a name also used to refer to a species of Central America. It is seriously threatened and in nature only fewer than 50 specimens remain. For many years the parakeet of Malherbe has been considered a subspecies or a chromatic variant of the most common front paraialial parakeet. However, more recent studies have shown that it is a separate species. He lives in the forests of Nothofagus of ' South Island of New Zealand, but in ancient times, before the arrival of humans on the island, occupied a much wider range. Its survival is threatened by the demolition of primary forests, where it finds the old trees on which to nest, grazing animals that graze the low bushes where it finds nourishment and predation by rats, stoats and catsintroduced
