Description

Pteropus scapulatus is a bat from the genus Pteropus that occurs in the north and east of Australia,far into the interior,and in the far south of Papua New Guinea,south of the Fly River.P.scapulatus is a small flying fox with unharmed lower legs and transparent wings.The body is red-brown,sometimes with yellow or white spots on the shoulders,the head gray.The head-body length is 125 to 200 mm,the forearm length 120 to 150 mm,the ear length 29 to 40 mm and the weight 300 to 600 g.In the beginning of the summer (October-November),this animal forms large colonies of sometimes hundreds of thousands of individuals,where parings also take place.Not long after the camps disintegrate in March or April,the young are born,who are sexually mature after 18 months.This species mainly eats nectar,but also fruit.
