Description

The beach sandpiper ( Calidris himantopus or Micropalama himantopus ) is a species of charadriform bird of the Scolopacidae family.It is a small coastal shorebird;it has some resemblance to the somewhat smaller scolopid calipids.The information provided by its DNA sequence is not sufficient to determine whether it should belong to the genus Calidris or to the monotypic genus Micropalama.It seems that it is more related to the sandpiper sandpiper,that is another species of difficult classification that has been located in a preliminary way within Calidris and that could eventually be joined with it,in the genus Erolia.The sandbank zancon reproduces in the open spaces of the Arctic tundra in North America.It is a long-range migratory bird,it spends the winter in the northern zone of South America.Sporadic has been observed in the western part of Europe,Japan and northern Australia.This species nests in the soil,laying three to four eggs.
