Description

The common shrew or Eurasian shrew ( Sorex araneus Linnaeus,1758 ) is the most common species of shrew and is also one of the most numerous mammals,being widespread throughout northern Europe,including Great Britain,but excluding Ireland.It measures on average 55-82 mm in length and usually weighs 5-12 grams.It is easily recognized by its velvety dark brown fur and pale belly.The young have a coat with lighter colors,before they make their first moult,when the darker winter coat develops.The common shrew has small eyes,a movable,pointed nose and red-tipped teeth.He lives about 23 months.
