Description

The spallerosse spade ( Calicalicus rufocarpalis Goodman,Hawkins & Domergue,1997 ) is a bird of the Vangidae family,endemic to Madagascar.It is a small spade (14-15 cm) with a robust beak and rather short wings.Presents,like the other members of the family,a marked sexual dimorphism.The plumage of the male is predominantly gray,with white forehead and cheeks and black bib;the remiges feathers and wing coverts are brick red,as well as the tail;the lower parts are whitish with hazel spots.The female has a less lively color,predominantly light brown.The irises are yellow,the black beak and the gray-pink legs.
