(Megalops atlanticus)



The royal tarpon or tarpon ( Megalops atlanticus species ),is an osteoptic elopiform fish of the megalopid family.It is a large fish,between 2 and 2.5 m and about 150 to 161 kg in weight,with a fusiform body similar to a herring,completely covered with large and thick scales,bluish green on the top and silver on its sides.The dorsal fin begins in the middle of the back and in the last radius,as it happens with the anal fin,it lengthens until forming a filament.The pectoral fins are in low position and the pelvic fins are abdominal.The true tars live in the coastal areas of the Atlantic,Florida and in Africa in tropical latitudes.They also inhabit estuaries and even rivers and lakes.They are grouped in banks to pursue,sometimes even fresh water,the fish they feed on.Its meat is not particularly nice but its large size make it a desirable prey for sport fishing.Tarpon fishing in Tecolutla,Mexico,as well as in Rio San Juan,Nicaragua.
