It is endemic to Hawaii, where it is known only from the island of Hawaii and an islet off of Lanai. Ten occurrences exist for a total of over 1000 individuals. It is a federally listed endangered species of the United States.Portulaca sclerocarpais an endemic species and is considered “vulnerable” – likely to become endangered in the near future. This plant is uncommon and and is found only on the island of Hawai’i. It occurs mostly in dry habitats at high elevations from 3,300 to 5,300 feet.
