Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM), which was launched last April.

Located outside of the European Columbus laboratory module on the International Space Station, the ASIM is a made up of optical cameras, photometers, and X-ray and gamma-ray detectors.

The ASIM is designed to detect the electrical discharges that extend above thunderstorms into the upper atmosphere.
