Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency shows an active galaxy that is about 1.1 billion light years from Earth.

This quasar, which is named the Teacup for its unique shape, was thought to be dying until recent observations from ESA’s XMM-Newton telescope and NASA’s Chandra X-ray observatory suggest it is still burning brightly.

The quasar has dimmed over time, but has only faded by a factor of 25 or less over the past 100,000 years.
