Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at at heavy air pollution over the Pearl River Delta in southern China.

While air pollution in northern China is more common due to colder temperatures and thus, more coal and wood burned for heating, stagnant winds caused smog to accumulate here in the skies of Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Hong Kong.

This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra satellite.
