Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows a massive smoke plume lingering over Indonesia’s Mount Anak Krakatau on September 22, 2018.

Volcanic ash and steam are flowing southwest over the Sunda Strait

While volcanic activity in this region is not unusual, the local alert is currently set at “caution,” which is the second-highest level.

According to local reports, this eruption has been ongoing since June 19, 2018, and ash plumes have shot up as high as 6,000 feet.
