The emerald green Aral Sea is fringed with ice in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, acquired on January 28, 2004, by NASA’s Aqua satellite. White snow dusts Kazakhstan, top, and parts of Uzbekistan, below, while the region’s rivers are covered with white ice. Signs of winter are also apparent in the agricultural region to the south of the sea where green fields have been replaced by a web of brown.
