Athena will glimpse much deeper into the universe •

Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency introduces an advanced “mirror module” that will be a critical component of Athena, a future space mission that is expected to launch in 2031.

Hundreds of these modules will be integrated into Athena’s flight mirror, which will be completed several years before launch to allow for testing.

Athena’s observatory will use entirely new X-ray optics technology to explore up to 100 times deeper into the universe than what has ever been possible, observing the very hottest, high-energy celestial objects.
