Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the city of Wildwood, which is located on a barrier island in New Jersey Jersey is known for its wide beaches.

Along the coast of New Jersey, most beaches are retreating as a result of natural erosion, residential development, and sea level rise. This is not the case in Wildwood, however, where the beaches have been expanding for more than 100 years.

Due to processes such as longshore drift, sand naturally moves south-southwest along this stretch of the coast.
