Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the Black Belt Prairie, a region of fertile farmland that is so distinctive it can be seen from space.

The Black Belt stretches from northeastern Mississippi into central Alabama in the shape of a crescent, and is named for its rich, black topsoil.

The image was captured by MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite.
