Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the Camp Fire in northern California, which has exploded into the most destructive fire in the history of the state.

Authorities have confirmed that the fire has claimed the lives of nine people, and that number is expected to rise.

The Camp Fire erupted 90 miles north of Sacramento on Thursday, and consumed 70,000 acres of land by 10 a.m. the following morning.

Strong winds expanded the fire to the south and southwest overnight, and it quickly tripled in size.
