Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3), which was designed to measure carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere.

Observations from OCO-3 will improve our understanding of global emissions from human activities on a regional scale,  including CO2 sources and sinks.

The instrument has been successfully mounted on the International Space Station, and captured its first images on June 25, 2019.
