Night lights over Chicago and the Great Lakes • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at glowing night lights as seen from above Chicago and the Great Lakes.

This image was created using data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite. Information from this satellite helps scientists track artificial lights, economic activity, and development patterns.

The map above represents light differences from 2012 to 2016. White light resembles no change in light, while red reflects lights out and purple represents new lights.
