The Sea of Okhotsk is classified as a marginal sea, which means it is a portion of an ocean basin that is partially enclosed by islands and peninsulas. In this case, the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Kuril Islands, and Sakhalin Island tuck the sea away from the Pacific Ocean.
