Clouds linger over the Brazilian landscape •

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features popcorn clouds over the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Gonçalo.

Clouds linger over the entire landscape, but are absent over the water, including the Guanabara Bay.

Heat from the sun warms the land surfaces, which warms the air above it, and then all of that warm air rises up with its water vapor to form clouds. On the other hand, bodies of water do not warm up as quickly.

The image was captured on March 25, 2020 by an astronaut onboard the International Space Station.
