The Oxbow on the Connecticut River in Massachusetts

The oxbow on the Connecticut River in Massachusetts is seen here in the Image of the Day taken by the NASA Earth Observatory. The U-shaped section of the Connecticut River in Massachusetts is the centerpiece in Thomas Cole’s 1836 painting The Oxbow, which was created while the segment was still connected to the main river. Just a few years later, the oxbow became cut off due to floodwaters and railroad construction.
