Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the dry and damaging effects of a persistent drought in Australia. According to NASA, last month was the driest July across the continent since 2002.

New South Wales has been hit particularly hard, with about 99 percent of the state experiencing drought conditions by the beginning of August.

This map was created using data obtained from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), which is NASA’s first satellite that is dedicated to measuring water content in soil.
