Destructive wildfire tears through Gran Canaria •

Last update: January 17th, 2020 at 8:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features a wildfire on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria off the northwest coast of Africa.

The wildfire ignited on August 17 near the town of Tejeda and spread to Tamadaba Natural Park, destroying around 10,000 hectares of land.

According to the ESA, the fire was intensified by a combination of high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity.

This false color image was captured on August 19 using the shortwave infrared bands from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission. Burn scars are visible in dark brown.
