Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Hurricane Dorian, the first major hurricane of 2019, which continues to intensify in the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

By the afternoon of August 30, Dorian was classified as a category 3 storm headed for the northern Bahamas and the eastern coast of Florida.

“Life-threatening storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds are likely in portions of the northwestern Bahamas, where a hurricane watch is in effect,” reported the National Hurricane Center.  “A prolonged period of storm surge, high winds and rainfall is likely in portions of Florida into next week, including the possibility of hurricane-force winds over inland portions of the Florida peninsula.”
