Drastic changes in the Padma River • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows how dramatically the Padma River has shifted in size and location over the last twenty years.

Flooding events and other disturbances cause extreme erosion across the banks of the river, which is located in Bangladesh. Hundreds to thousands of hectares of land fall into the Padma River every year, destroying homes and displacing millions of people.

The images were captured by the Thematic Mapper on Landsat 5 and the Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8.
