Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at dust and sand in the air over the Cape Verde Islands.

Often during the winter when temperatures drop and high pressure increases across northern Africa, potent winds blow across the Sahara Desert and kick up sand and dust that blow over the ocean.

This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite.
