Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at dusty winds over the coast of western Africa.

The photo was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on board NASA’s Terra satellite.

Strong winds kicked up a substantial amount of dust over the western African desert and carried it out to the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Cabo Verde islands. The continent of Africa is easily the greatest global contributor of dust into the atmosphere, which transports nutrients and affects climate.
