Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency shows why Venus is often referred to as Earth’s “evil twin.”

According to the ESA, the second planet from the Sun has a poisonous atmosphere of carbon dioxide.

Although Venus has a thick, cloud-rich atmosphere, it actually rains sulphuric acid. Its dense atmosphere makes Venus hotter than the planet Mercury, with a 470-degree-Celsius surface.

This false-color image was taken in ultraviolet light with the Venus Monitoring Camera on July 23, 2007.
