Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features ESTRACK, which is a network of tracking stations located across the globe that are used to communicate with spacecraft.

A series of smaller-sized stations link space missions with ground controllers. In addition, three massive dish antennas located in Australia, Spain, and Argentina allow scientists to monitor spacecraft that are hundreds of millions of kilometers away.

The network is critical for receiving scientific data and spacecraft status information.
