Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features a large fire cloud that formed over a wildfire in eastern Washington on August 8, 2019.

David Peterson, lead forecaster for FIREX-AQ, was in the cockpit of NASA’s DC-8.

“The views were absolutely stunning,” said Peterson. “Very few photographs of large pyroCbs are available, especially from the air.”

“PyroCb are like large chimneys, transporting a large quantity of smoke into the lower stratosphere.”

NASA scientists with the FIREX-AQ mission are studying the composition and chemistry of smoke to gain a better understanding of its impact on air quality and climate.
