Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency (ESA) is a fascinating look at the sky on the night of June 16, when a brilliant fireball burst through the clouds over Belgium.

German astronomer Uwe Reichert was exploring his neighborhood near Heidelberg, Germany, to find the best viewpoint for capturing images of the moon and Venus. The moment Reichert fired up his camera, the bright white and green light of the meteor appeared as it disintegrated on its descent toward the Earth.

The ESA and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) will host a live webcast on Asteroid Day, June 30.
