East of the city of Ourense in northern Spain, fires were burning in the parched forests and woodlands on August 7, 2005. Fires continued in the tinder-dry landscapes of northern Portugal, particularly around the city of Porto. This image shows the region as it appeared during the afternoon (local time) overpass of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 7. Places where MODIS detected active fires are marked in red.

The high-resolution image provided above is 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at additional resolutions.
